Vast grasslands, gnarled oaks and the occasional palm tree characterize the landscape. You immediately shift down a gear, not only in the car or on the bike, but especially mentally. The Myakka River runs quietly through the park, while the first alligators often lie motionless in the sun on the banks.

Only around 30 minutes from Sarasota and 1 hour from Fort Myers a natural backdrop opens up that looks surprisingly pristine. No high-rise buildings, no hustle and bustle – instead a landscape that has hardly changed for centuries. The pristine landscape of rivers, wetlands, prairies and dense forests is a real paradise for nature lovers and wildlife watchers. This is exactly what makes this nature park so attractive, reflecting the old Florida.

The proximity to wildlife is particularly impressive. You can see alligators as well as ospreys, herons and, with a bit of luck, even bald eagles. A short stop along the park road is often enough to be right in the middle of the action.

The Canopy Walkway is a real highlight. High above the ground, the narrow suspended path leads through the treetops – a change of perspective that completely changes the view of the landscape. From the observation tower, the whole dimension of the park becomes visible: endless expanses, criss-crossed by expanses of water and green islands.

You can explore the park on foot, by bike, by boat or by car. We went to the park by bike. Unfortunately, we had to cut the tour short because we had a flat tire. But: no problem, you can also drive through by car and stop anywhere. We will try the cycle path on the way back next time. Incidentally, the Myakka River is at its calmest and most intense on the water.

Myakka River State Park is not a spectacular theme park – and that’s exactly what makes it so special.
