St. George Island State Park with pristine beaches

Beaches St. George Island
In St. George Island State Park on the island of the same name, the “Lonely Beach” guarantee still exists.

The St. George Island State Park offers 15 kilometers of undeveloped beaches of the finest natural beauty. Surrounded by a beautiful dune landscape, the beach on the dune island of the same name is in a dreamlike location.

St. George Island State Park can be reached after crossing the bridge from Apalachicola turning left. Before you really enjoy yourself on one of the dream beaches in the park, you should turn right to enjoy the built-up part of the island.

Entry to the park costs USD 6 (2023), which is worth every penny. As you drive through the park, the dune landscape becomes increasingly hilly. Unfortunately, we couldn’t drive to the end during our stay and had to turn around in front of a barrier. That wasn’t too bad, because the entire coastline here is simply magical.

The beach is narrow and very picturesque. You won’t want to get out of the fantastic water, which is crystal clear despite the sandy bottom. The water temperatures here in the north of Florida are a lot cooler than on the Gulf Coast, but still very pleasant.

Easily accessible via wooden paths

Even in August, you may be lucky enough to find a secluded beach here. The beaches themselves can be reached via enchanting wooden walkways. The park also offers everything your heart desires and is suitable for sunbathing, swimming, canoeing, boating, hiking, camping and nature studies of the flora and fauna. Two natural boat ramps allow small boats to be launched into the water.

Anglers With a bit of luck, you may come across flounder, redfish, sea trout, pompano, whitefish, Spanish mackerel and other fish on the beach or in the bay. Sea turtles and beach birds of all kinds are our fun beach neighbors. On the four-kilometre nature trail, you can discover a wide variety of birds such as mudpipers, Kentish plovers and American scissorbills, which regularly nest here.

There are six large picnic areas with barbecues and sanitary facilities. The comfortable campsite has 60 pitches with water and electricity connections, a central waste disposal station and two bathhouses. A primitive campsite can be reached via a four-kilometer trail or by canoe or kayak. There are also sites available for scouts and other organized groups. An evening stroll makes the place unforgettable.

Annual events round off the offer here. For tours of the island without staying on the beach, 2 hours with short stops along the road or on the beach are sufficient.
