Historic Pensacola Village: immerse yourself in the past

John Gorrie Museum: inventor of the ice machine

If you want to know who you have to thank for the air conditioning systems that are indispensable in Florida, you can find out more at the Gorrie House Museum in Apalachicola. The physician Dr. John Gorrie lived in this house from 1803 to 1855. In order to cool patients with yellow fever, he developed an ice machine, which he patented in 1851. This made him the inventor of the first cold air machine for cooling rooms.

Seaside: On the trail of the Truman Show

Nice? Pretty? No, the little village of Seaside on the Emerald Coast in the Panhandle is really cute. The retort vacation village served as the filming location for The Truman Show in 1998. We still remember Truman Burbank’s, aka Jim Carrey’s, unforgettable morning line: “Good morning. Oh, and if we don’t see each other again, good afternoon, good evening and good night!”
