Mailbox diversity – How does it work with the post?
Not only are there incredibly beautiful mailboxes for mail in Florida, but the function of the little flag behind them is also very pleasing. At first, the emigrant thinks that when the flag is up, mail has been posted. But far from it. After all, who would think that the“letter carrier” in the form of a mail van not only delivers mail, but also takes it away with him?
If the flag is raised, the letter carrier knows that a letter is waiting there for the post office to take away. That’s really practical. After all, why should the letter carrier only hand out letters if he is going back to the post office afterwards anyway. So he can take the outgoing mail with him – properly stamped, of course.
Now one might fear that the mail could be stolen because the letterboxes are open to everyone. But it doesn’t seem to be any more or less the case than if it wasn’t, otherwise the system wouldn’t work. In rural areas in particular, neighbors also look out for each other. The same applies in reverse, of course: if someone intends to steal mail, they could empty the letterboxes after the letter carrier has arrived. However, this would then have criminal consequences if they were caught.
For those who want to post mail on the go or don’t trust the system at all, there are still the official blue letterboxes, although these are very rare. At first, the newcomer thinks that it can’t be right to have so few letterboxes, until he finally realizes that the letter carrier offers a great service.
