Gasparilla Island | where the Bush Presidential Family Vacations
The Gasparilla Island State Park near Port Charlotte is 51 hectares in size and was established in 1983. On the offshore barrier island in Southwest Florida, there is little car traffic, but two beautiful beaches: Sea Grape and Range Light, with the southernmost of the two being the more beautiful.
There are also two picnic areas. Swimming, snorkeling, fishing and enjoying nature are the main activities that take place here.
The beautiful Boca Grande Lighthouse, built in 1890 at the southern tip of the island, is one of the oldest structures in Lee County and the oldest building on the island. The adjoining museum and visitor center can also be visited, although there are closures during holiday periods.
The U.S. Coast Guard operated the lighthouse until 1966. Since 1983, it has been open to the public after extensive renovation work. In 1986, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Not to be confused with a white lighthouse located a few miles off the southern tip, which appears rather shabby and neglected.
Gasparilla and the Hurricanes
Gasparilla Island, especially the town of Boca Grande, has been hit by a series of devastating hurricanes in recent years. Hurricane Ian in September 2022 hit the island with wind speeds of up to 155 mph and caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure.
In 2024, two more storms exacerbated the situation. Hurricane Helene brought severe flooding, causing significant damage to roads and buildings. Shortly after, Hurricane Milton hit the region, leading to further destruction, including damage to the historic Gasparilla Inn, vacation rental properties, and other significant structures.
Despite these challenges, the community shows remarkable resilience. Overall, Gasparilla Island faces a long but determined phase of reconstruction, supported by the strength and cohesion of its community. Although many businesses and roads have now reopened, traces of the storm are still visible, but they are becoming fewer and construction work is decreasing.
