Emerald Coast | Beaches and water of superlatives

Forget all the beaches you’ve ever seen in Florida: those on the Emerald Coast are undoubtedly the most beautiful. Coming from the east, the Emerald Coast begins to impress with its incredible beauty in Panama City Beach. Even if the architectural surroundings here leave a lot to be desired, to put it mildly, the beach here is also simply incredibly picturesque.

Crystal clear and actually emerald green water caresses the fine white quartz sand and makes you forget even the concrete buildings behind you – at least out of season.

If you continue westwards, you will pass seaside resorts such as Rosemary Beach, Seacrest, Seagrove Beach, Seaside, Miramar Beach and Destin. High-rise buildings are the exception here, mostly pastel-colored stilt houses in the lush dunes and excuse the increasingly rare concrete bunkers. Unfortunately, “privacy is often protected”, which is dear and expensive.

The region stretches for around 160 kilometers along the Gulf of Mexico and is one of the most beautiful and varied stretches of coastline in the USA.

The Emerald Coast is located in the Florida Panhandlefar away from the classic Florida destinations such as Miami, Orlando or Tampa. Many international tourists simply don’t know the region – they fly to South Florida, not Destin or Pensacola.

While cities such as Miami or the Keys are actively promoted abroad, the Emerald Coast is more of a domestic destination. This means that many visitors come from Georgia, Alabama or Louisiana – but hardly from Europe.

Apart from Panama City Beach, there are hardly any high-rise buildings directly on the beach, no large theme parks, no overcrowded party areas. Instead: Nature, tranquillity, local flair. Many visitors appreciate exactly that – and spread out along the long coastline.

Unlike in South Florida, where hotels are often lined up directly on the beach, on the Emerald Coast you will often find access points with parking lots, promenades and dunes – so visitors spread out automatically.

Which is the most beautiful beach on the Emerald Coast?

Henderson Beach State Park in Destin is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the Emerald Coast. Many travel guides, visitors and locals agree: if you want to experience the Emerald Coast at its best, this is the place to be.

The beach delights with its fine white, powdery quartz sand, which is almost dazzling in the sunlight. The sea shimmers in typical emerald green, clear and calm – ideal for swimming, sunbathing or simply enjoying yourself. Unlike in many other coastal towns, the shore here is not built up: As a protected state park, Henderson Beach is free of hotels or roads directly on the beach. This makes for a quiet, natural atmosphere – even in the high season.

Thanks to the gently sloping shore, clean sanitary facilities, picnic areas and nature trails, the beach is particularly suitable for families. Those who enjoy taking photos will find perfect motifs here – from the gentle dunes to spectacular sunsets.

Of course, there are other fantastic coastal nature spots along the Emerald Coast: Grayton Beach is perfect for nature lovers, Navarre Beach scores with its vastness and tranquillity, Pensacola Beach with its pier and good infrastructure, and Santa Rosa Island impresses with its relaxed flair along Scenic Highway 30A.

There are only the best beaches

Nevertheless, the tourist species and the less well-heeled local population have also been provided with some public beaches. In any case, you shouldn’t make the mistake of using Google Earth to find the best dune landscapes. They are certainly private and inaccessible. Besides, a lot of space here is taken up by the navy – the more western the more frequent.

The Emerald Coast then reaches its peak on Okaloosa Island and in the Gulf Island National Seashore on Santa Rosa Island. If you drive along the Miracle Strip Parkway from Destin towards Pensacola Beach, there are two beach access points between the Coast Guard Station Destin and an Air Force station, at least one of which should definitely be visited – even if it’s just to take photos.
