The building permit – 31 permits left until moving in

After submitting the work plans to the city of Cape Coral, we were amazed at how quickly the building permit is issued here. It usually only takes about two weeks to get the building permit. Now we are only 31 inspections away from moving in. Yes, that’s right: 31 construction phases are first approved by the city before construction can continue.
This promises a high level of quality assurance. This is backed up by constantly increasing building regulations , particularly due to the risk of hurricanes. In any case, no new building will collapse so quickly when natural disasters sweep across the country.
Building permit and approvals can be viewed online
All data on the individual acceptance and approval steps are now available online, so that you are always up to date. Our builder has set up the permit board. Here, too, all construction stages are noted and the permits and approvals are displayed. In addition, the construction plans are always to hand, as they are stored there.
We will mark the construction phases that require acceptance in the following reports with our Florido from the building authority.
Extensive licensing requirements in Cape Coral
Cape Coral is not nicknamed the “City of Permits” for nothing. Almost every building project – whether new construction, renovation or minor structural changes – requires a permit. These include, among others:
- New buildings and extensions
- Pools and terraces
- Fences and carports
- Photovoltaic systems and generators
- Pergolas and garden sheds
Even for seemingly simple projects such as the installation of a Tesla charger or an emergency generator, a permit is required.
The approval process in detail
Applications are submitted via the online portal EnerGov of the city of Cape Coral. For owners who wish to build themselves (owner-builders), a personal visit to City Hall is required.
Required documents may vary depending on the project, but often include:
- Building plans and site plans
- Energy demand calculations
- Truss and window plans
- Drainage and dewatering plans
- Proof of the protection of protected animal species(e.g. Burrowing Owl Affidavit)
- Proof of ownership of the property (Warranty Deed)
The city provides a complete checklist in its official application form.
