Siesta Key Beach near Sarasota in Sarasota County is a superlative beach that tops the “sugar sand” criterion because the much finer medium of flour does it more justice. There must be something in the sand that makes it pleasantly cool compared to other places. No wonder the child-friendly beach was ranked second among the ten best beaches in the USA this year.
Dr. Beach named Sieste Key among the top ten more often
Dr. Stephen Leatherman, alias Dr. Beach, makes the selection from year to year using a specially developed evaluation system. The professor at Florida International University is regarded as the USA’s beach authority. Siesta Key has often been in his top ten and has even been ranked number one. Why it “only” came second this year is not entirely clear. Because the beach has been and is still being rebuilt and modernized.
An extensively expanded or renovated parking lot now offers plenty of parking spaces on the island under the currently still virgin palm trees, which will soon be hanging down their fronds. The parking lot is free! You heard right. The sanitary facilities, from changing tables to foot showers, are very practical and plentiful. There is a kiosk area and numerous picnic spots. The beach is cleaned regularly. And the water is simply divine. The beach is also very suitable for very young children, as it gently slopes into the sea.
Water, public facilities, parking lot: all this is great, but it is surpassed by the sand. The very wide beach with its incomparably light-colored sand, which feels like flour, is almost dazzling. Comparing it to sugar would be an insult at this point. The only, not really a disadvantage: you have it everywhere at home. But what does that matter when you remember such an unforgettable bathing experience.
A little further south is Crescent Beach and further south is Turtle Beach.
