Where is South Beach?
South Beach is located at the southern end of Miami Beach and stretches roughly from South Pointe Park to 23rd Street. The beach promenade runs parallel to the Atlantic Ocean and is easily accessible from Downtown Miami, Brickell, or the airport.
What makes South Beach special?
We visit South Beach on almost every trip to Miami. Especially in the morning, when the partygoers are still asleep, the beach is pleasantly quiet before the boardwalk and the sand fill up as the day goes on. But don’t just focus on the beach—make your beach trip perfect with a stroll through Lummus Park and the Art Deco Historic District. Or watch the big cruise ships set sail from South Pointe Park.
South Beach combines a beach vacation with big-city charm. While the wide sandy beach and warm water take center stage during the day, Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, and Lincoln Road transform into lively promenades in the evening, lined with restaurants, bars, and cafés, as well as plenty of shopping options.
Another hallmark of South Beach is its historic Art Deco hotels with their pastel-colored facades, which give the neighborhood its distinctive character.
The Beach and Water at South Beach
The sandy beach, which stretches for several kilometers, slopes gently into the water and is ideal for swimming. The water is usually clear and, especially in calm weather, displays the typical turquoise-blue hues of South Florida. The beach is very wide and therefore never crowded. There are plenty of opportunities for sports and recreation, such as the famous Muscle Beach in Lummus Park or the volleyball courts next to the shaded beach promenade that runs parallel to Ocean Drive.
Lifeguards monitor numerous sections of the beach. As is the case everywhere along Florida’s Atlantic coast , however, you should still pay attention to flags and warnings about rip currents.
Parking
There are numerous ( not exactly inexpensive) parking garages and paid parking lots available around South Beach. The parking garages on Collins Avenue and near Lincoln Road are particularly popular. On weekends and during peak season, it’s a good idea to arrive early, as parking spaces fill up quickly.
Who is South Beach best for?
South Beach is ideal for anyone who wants to combine a beach vacationwith Miami’s unique flair. Families benefit from the excellent amenities and the shallower sections of the beach.
