Our grandchildren are probably wondering what wallpaper actually is. We are reviving this wall covering and bringing the beach, the Live Oaks and the vacation feeling into our home. We did the wallpapering ourselves – it wasn’t that easy. We’ll tell you what you need to bear in mind here.
In particular, choosing the right wallpaper for each room took a lot of effort. Good for those who are able to use Photoshop and can thus simulate the individual rooms. We staged many different motifs before we ordered the wallpaper online for around $100 each.
We had to complain about the Live Oak wallpaper. It was too dark. I had used my own high-resolution photo, taken in Georgia, as a template. The first shipment had no depth at all, the whole dark green and brown was a single blob of color. The second time the quality was right.

Wallpaper has been experiencing a comeback in Germany for several years now – as a creative stylistic device with a strong spatial effect. Whether as a single accent wall, in a natural or concrete texture look or with large photo motifs: wallpaper can structure rooms, create depth or make them look more homely. In Florida, on the other hand, wallpaper is rather rare and is often considered old-fashioned or high-maintenance – painted drywall with a textured surface (e.g. knockdown finish) is standard there.
To ensure that wallpapers look professional, it is particularly important to ensure that they are applied smoothly. The substrate and cutting must be prepared precisely for this: The substrate must be even, clean and primed. With paper wallpapers, the back of the wallpaper is pasted, whereas with non-woven wallpapers, the wall is painted.
The strips had to be glued together with millimeter precision, without overlapping, and carefully pressed on with a wallpaper roller – never with too much pressure so as not to distort the pattern. This was particularly difficult with the monochrome blue of the sky on the beach wallpaper. Precision is particularly important with photo wallpapers or patterns with a pattern repeat in order to achieve a seamless overall look. You should have a good set of wallpapering tools to hand as well as enough time to achieve a clean result.
